Beschreibung: The Institute of Biochemistry (Prof. Dr. Lienhard Schmitz), Medical Faculty is inviting applications for a

PhD student position
(salary scale TV-H 13, 65 %)

The position is available from 01.11.2017 until the end of the project 30.06.2020. The project entitled "Elucidating the contribution of SIAH2 to the development of cor pulmonale" is part of the DFG-funded collaborative research center 1213 "Pulmonary Hypertension and Cor pulmonale". The position is provided for a promotion within the framework of the Giessen Graduate Center for Life Sciences.

The project: This project is carried out together with the Physiological Institute (University Giessen, Prof. Susanne Rohrbach) and investigates the role of the ubiquitin E3 ligase SIAH2 to the development of cor pulmonale. We have found that mice lacking the ubiquitin E3 ligase SIAH2 are largely protected mice from hypoxia-induced cor pulmonale. It will now be investigated whether heart-specific deletion of Siah2 protects against right ventricular hypertrophy (RVH). We will also assess whether ongoing RVH can be inhibited or even reversed by inducible ablation of Siah2. The molecular targets, signaling pathways and metabolic changes regulated by SIAH2 in the right ventricle will be identified and further characterized. Additionally, we will test the applicability of SIAH2 inhibitors for the prevention and treatment of RVH.
This project is funded by the CRC1213 and employs a battery of diffent methods from biochemistry/molecular biology and also uses mouse models (https://www.uni-giessen.de/forschung/einrichtungen/sfb/corpulmonale).

Your profile: You have succesfully finished your university degree in medicine, biochemistry, biology or a related field. A strong interest in cell biology, molecular imaging techniques and molecular biology is welcome.
