Beschreibung: Background.
Diagnostics and prognosis of cancer patients are challenging tasks due to the diversity of tumour subtypes, inter- and intratumour heterogeneity and complex patterns of molecular changes. At the same time, the development of “-omics” technologies over the past years provides large sets of multi-omics data that characterize cancer biopsies and cell lines at different levels – from single nucleotide mutations in genes to changes in transcript expression or proteins. The integration of these multiple data levels offers new perspectives and applications for personalised medicine. Among the computational approaches that can help to meet these challenges, machine learning brings significant opportunities for improving the detection and monitoring of disease.

Objectives.
The successful candidate will investigate public multi-omics data relevant to cancer research conducted at our department. She/He will implement and benchmark several feature extraction methods, including those previously developed within our team. Next, the student will test several machine-learning techniques, including, but not limited to: support vector machines, random forests, deep neural networks, in order to identify optimal predictors and the most robust pipeline for patient classification.

Training and research environment.
The Bioinformatics and Modelling Group is a dynamic and multinational team within the Proteome and Genome Research Unit, Oncology Department of LIH. The group leads and enable cross-disciplinary research partnerships, which benefit from its members’ expertise in: (a) biological network modelling and analysis; (b) integrative, large-scale analysis of multi-omics data; and (c) biostatistics and machine learning. The group’s top priority is the development of novel computational models for cancer patient stratification and drug response prediction using multi-omics data. The student will have opportunities for research training and soft-skills development, as well as for collaborating within a highly multi-disciplinary research environment.

What we offer and conditions:
- The student will have an opportunity to work in a collabarative and international scientific environment, attend lectures by eminent scientists from abroad, and present their own work during lab meetings.
- They will receive training in bioinformatics and biostatistics, including machine learning and basics of cancer biology.
- The student should have basic knowledge in R. Knowledge of Python, though not essential, will be considered an asset.
- Applicants must be affiliated with a University. English is mandatory.
- Master students will receive 500€/month unless they have their own funding source, e.g. Erasmus grant.
