Beschreibung: Aim of the research of the group of stem cell¬–material-interactions is to develop artificial systems that mimic the natural environment of hematopoietic (= blood forming) stem cells, the ‘stem cell niche’ in the bone marrow. These model systems are used to understand the niche in health as well as hematological and musculoskeletal diseases. In the framework of the project “bloodANDbone” (https://www.kit.edu/kit/english/pi_2017_125_bone-marrow-models-to-study-blood-and-musculoskeletal-disorders.php), funded by the European Research Council, we are currently looking for a PhD candidate in biology or biophysics. The successful candidate will study the biophysical principles of the preferential tumor cell metastasis to bone, which occurs in during the progression of many cancers such as breast or lung cancer. The results of this project will be used to develop novel regenerative treatments for patients suffering from hematological or musculoskeletal diseases.
Methoden: This is an interdisciplinary project, in which methods of cell biology, chemistry, materials science, and biochemistry are applied. Innovative 3D biomaterials will be developed and used to answer fundamental biological and biophysical questions.

Sonstiges: Personal requirements: Applicants must have a university or master degree in the field of biology, biochemistry, biophysics or a similar field of study. In addition, the strong willingness and ability to work in a highly interdisciplinary team are expected. Experience in (stem) cell culture, biophysical methods or biomaterial development is a plus but not required.
