Beschreibung: We are searching for a talented PhD candidate
interested in an unusual biophysical research project.

The PhD project addresses a hypothesis
on the evolution of oxygenic photosynthesis
which involves light-driven formation of
manganese oxides by an ancient photosystem-II variant at a geologically relevant scale.

The interdisciplinary project is jointly supervised by Prof. Holger Dau
(Free University Berlin) and Prof. Robert
Burnap (Oklahoma State University). As a PhD
student, you will profit from the educational
program of the graduate school of a
collaborative research center, see "www.sfb1078.de".

A very good, recent Master degree in physics,
chemistry or biology is required. More
important than specific expertise is your
interest to get started in science with a biophysical PhD project with close links
to geo-biochemistry, inorganic materials
and artificial photosynthesis.

The candidate will start his PhD work with
financial support provided by the SFB 1078
in form of a a one-year probation fellowship and
subsequently may continue his PhD research as a
(non-permanent) scientific employee for further 2-3 years.

Methoden: Diverse set of (bio)physical methods to study
the response of the photosystem-II protein
complex after excitation with nanosecond
flashes of laser light.
X-ray absorption spectroscopy with
synchrotron radiation to investigate
protein-bound and inorganic metal clusters.
Protein purification and molecular biology
according to your interest in these methods.
