Beschreibung: A PhD/Master thesis in the Nano Interfaces Group led by Dr. Grazia Gonella in the Department of Molecular Spectroscopy at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz is available immediately. The selected candidate will conduct cutting edge research at the interface of physics, chemistry, optics, and life/environmental science. In particular the interest is focused on the fundamental mechanisms behind the Interactions of Protein with Surfaces (either polymeric surfaces or membranes). These interactions are of paramount importance to guide the design of new engineered materials (both on the surface or biomolecule side) and predict their performance.

The successful candidate will gain significant knowledge in nonlinear spectroscopy, classical surface science/colloid techniques. The Nano Interfaces Group is seeking a HIGHLY MOTIVATED PhD/MS student with EXCELLENT CV and with a background in physical chemistry/chemical physics/optics/spectroscopy or closely related field. Experience in laboratory automation, scientific programming, data analysis is a plus. Drive to get projects completed, enthusiasm for and capability of interdisciplinary work, excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment are a must. Records of creative research and scientific independence demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals are preferred.
Salary for the appointment will be consistent with the Max Planck Society guidelines.
Working scientific language at the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research is English. The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from disabled persons and women.

Applications will be considered until the position is filled.

The application should be sent by e-mail to: gonella@mpip-mainz.mpg.de and should include:
1) a letter of interest (max. 1 page), clearly stating the specific interest of the candidate to join the group, work on this project, his/her career goals, etc.
2) CV
3) grade transcripts or equivalent record of excellent academic performance clearly indicating courses taken and grades in each course
4) the names of at least two references.

Methoden: mostly nonlinear optical spectroscopies, plus standard surface science characterization techniques.
