Beschreibung: Our research focuses on the improvement of yeast strains (e.g. Saccharomyces cerevisiae) for industrial biotechnology. S. cerevisiae has become a favorite platform organism for the production of various chemical compounds by means of metabolic engineering. In fact, this organism has been engineered for the commercial production of advanced biofuels (e.g. isoprenoids, isobutanol), bulk chemicals as well as pharmaceuticals (e. g. the antimalarial drug precursor artemisinic acid or insulin) and neutraceuticals. Current projects aim at the improvement of product yield by the reduction of by-product formation, the extension of yeast's substrate spectrum in order to make use of certain (industrial) waste streams for the generation of value-added products and the improvement of cellular robustness for stresses occurring during industrial processes. We approach these questions by both rational and inverse engineering strategies exploiting the extensive toolbox nowadays available for systems metabolic engineering.

Bachelor of Science degree, excellent background in microbiology and molecular biology (preferably with regard to yeast), good written and verbal communication skills in the English language, team player with good communication skills, highly self-motivated and able to work independently, good time management skills

According the university regulations the theses projects are unpaid. The candidates stay matriculated at their current university and will receive a guest status at Jacobs University in order to fulfil their research at the laboratories of Jacobs University.
