A 3 year PhD position is open at IBMP (http://www.ibmp.cnrs.fr) Strasbourg) in the context of the IDEX International doctoral program allocated to the Thierry Heitz group to work on jasmonate hormone biology in rice.

Research Project
Jasmonate phytohormones (JAs) play major roles in plant development and in their responses to environmental challenges. Current knowledge indicates that JA biosynthesis and signaling has strong impacts on adaptation mechanisms of rice to different environmental stresses. The doctoral project aims at exploring jasmonate biology in rice, a major cereal crop where several agronomically relevant adaptation responses are affected by JAs. For exemple, jasmonate deficiency in a rice mutant impacts in opposed ways tolerance to osmotic and salt stress, but the underlying mechanisms are unknown. The first goal will be to determine detailed profiles of a spectrum of JAs and catabolites using established UPLC-MS/MS methods, after application of either of these stresses. In parallel, global transcriptome analysis will be performed to elucidate target genes that are differentially triggered in each situation in a JA-dependent manner. This will shed light on the molecular basis of the observed phenotypes and provide potential targets to engineer stress-tolerant rice lines. A second objective will be to explore JA pathway attenuation by metabolic diversion in rice. We discovered recently JA metabolic attenuation in Arabidopsis, and its relevance to modulate JA-dependent agronomic traits in rice will be examined through functional analysis with genetic, biochemical and analytical tools.
The project will be conducted in close collaboration with Dr Michael Riemann at Botanical Institute of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, and with a third partner in France. Multiple short stays at KIT are planned.

Eligibility : The candidate must have graduated with a high level Master degree in Life sciences by the end of June 2018, either from an institution outside France, OR, have completed a full Bachelor degree program abroad and have integrated a Master's degree from the University of Strasbourg.

Profile : We are looking for a motivated and skilled candidate with a solid general knowledge in (plant) biology, biochemistry, genetics and experience in some of the following fields : rice biology, standard DNA/RNA methods, RNAseq analysis, hormone signaling, metabolic analysis. Applicants should have some intellectual independence, and experimental accuracy. Fluency in English (spoken and written) and adaptability to French-German environments are prerequisites for the position.
