Beschreibung: PhD projects in Geomicrobiology

The Geomicrobiology research group at the University of Tübingen, Germany, is looking for highly motivated PhD students to work in different PhD projects on:

‘Microbial iron mineral transformation in modern and ancient environments’

Microorganisms have been harnessing the energy from iron redox transformations for their metabolic benefit for billions of years, with microbial iron oxidation and reduction now known to influence a huge range of environmental processes. However, many unanswered questions remain regarding the mechanisms by which Fe-metabolizing microbes act to shape the biogeochemistry of both ancient andmodern environments, including their role in soil formation, nutrient cycling, greenhouse gas emissionsand pollutant mobility. The Tübingen Geomicrobiology group specializes in the investigation of microbial iron-transforming processes from the microscopic to the field scale, and has contributed significantly to the understanding of iron-metabolizing bacteria in soils, sediments, aquifers, contaminated systems and on the early Earth (see publications on our website).

Multiple PhD projects are available to join our diverse, interdisciplinary, international and dynamic team of geomicrobiologists, molecular ecologists, and geochemists which will provide many opportunities for
the candidates to be creative and innovative, to work on a challenging and environmentally relevant project, and provide the opportunity of undertaking field work abroad. Ideal candidates should have a strong background in Environmental Microbiology and Biogeochemistry, and an interest in Geomicrobiology. Applicants must have the ability to work independently and in a team, have excellent management and communication skills, and be highly motivated to pursue interdisciplinary research. Good computer and language (English) skills are necessary, and field work experience highly beneficial.

Start date should be no later than January 2019. Employment (TVL E13, 65-75%, 3 years) will be arranged
by the University of Tübingen. Candidates with disabilities will be preferred in case of equal qualification.
