Beschreibung: Project Summary:

Ultracold neutrons (UCN) have been established as a valuable tool in precision fundamental neutron physics research since many years. They have unique properties, such as the fact that they can be stored in material-, magnetic- and gravitational traps for long times. However, the same properties make it difficult to detect and count UCN without significant losses.

In this project a PhD student will develop, prototype, build, test and characterize a novel detector for UCN based on 10B coated thin scintillator coupled to silicon photomultipliers.

The goal is a versatile, position sensitive detector with high detection efficiency, which can be used in various UCN experiments like searches for the free neutron lifetime or a non-vanishing electric dipole moment of neutrons.

The student will have the possibility to work in both abovementioned experiments in order to study possibilities and consequences of using the newly build detector in these experiments.

Applicant's Profile:

University degree in Physics, Engineering or similar; ability to work in a young and developing team; high motivation for finding technical solutions to problems in science; good communication skills in english. Experience in electronics or programming is a plus.
