Beschreibung: The NMR group of Prof. Huster at the Institute of Medical Physics and Biophysics at the Medical Department of the University of Leipzig, offers a Ph.D. position starting approximately on 1.11.2018. The project aims at characterizing the membrane interaction of small molecules (e.g. drugs) by solid-state NMR to get further insight into their membrane location and their impact on the lipid membrane.

For a number of small drug molecules applied in the treatment of various malignancies the interaction with a biological membrane is crucial, while our understanding of their interaction with membranes is rudimentary. Thus, knowledge about their interaction and impact on the lipid membranes will be the basis for understanding the mode of action of these drugs and for further drug development. This project will investigate the structure-dependent interaction of small-molecule kinase inhibitors with models and with biological membranes. With the combination of experimental and simulation approaches a model of interaction of the respective drug with membranes will be achieved, which will help postulate molecular mechanisms of their pharmacological effects and side effects.

We are looking for a motivated and open-minded candidate with the ability to work independently as well as in a team and with a strong interest in biophysical methods, especially NMR spectroscopy. An excellent level of written and spoken English as well as professional handling of research data are mandatory and expertise in NMR spectroscopy will be a benefit. The candidate should hold a master’s degree in (bio)physics, chemistry, biochemistry, pharmacy or a relevant field.
The working group offers modern equipment, a multi-disciplinary approach with state-of-the-art techniques, and a good working atmosphere in a young team.
