Beschreibung: We live in a world dominated by microbial life and share an intimate and life-long relationship with a multitude of microbial species, collectively known as microbiota. Most of these relationships are symbiotic partnerships that regulate organismal nutrition and metabolism. Also, microbes shape development, immunity, reproduction and longevity of their hosts. Although these processes are essential for the capacity of mosquitoes to transmit human pathogens, microbial contribution to them remains poorly understood. A genetic screen identified E. coli genes that control the development of the first instar larvae. This project will further explore the role of bacteria in later stages of larval development and mosquito infections with the human malaria parasite P. falciparum.
