Beschreibung: Research in the Mathies group focuses on Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) and how it can be used to enhance the sensitivity of high-resolution magic-angle-spinning (MAS) NMR spectroscopy. MAS NMR is the only spectroscopic method that can provide atomic-resolution structural information of non-crystalline, complex molecular systems in the solid state. Applications of MAS NMR range from structural biology to material science, but are limited by the inherent low sensitivity of the method. The aim of this PhD project is to investigate if and how the high polarization generated in the photo-excited triplet states of certain organic molecules can be used for DNP/MAS NMR. This new approach to DNP has the potential to enhance the sensitivity of MAS NMR by more than three orders of magnitude.

The candidate we look for has a MSc degree in Physics, Chemistry or a related field and ideally has research experience in physical chemistry, molecular physics or spectroscopy. He or she is highly motivated, driven by curiosity, and can work independently as well as in a team.

The University of Konstanz is a young university (founded 1966) and has since 2006 been a part of the German Exzellenzinitiative. The city of Konstanz is situated on Lake Constance (Bodensee) near the Swiss border and the environment offers plenty of opportunities for summer and winter activities.

The position is available immediately and applications will be considered until the position is filled. To apply, send a cover letter and a CV to Dr. Guinevere Mathies at guinevere.mathies@uni-konstanz.de
