Beschreibung: Luxembourg Institute of Health is a public research organisation at the forefront of biomedical sciences. With its strong research expertise in oncology, population health, infection and immunity based on human biological samples, its research activities impact on people’s health. At the Luxembourg Institute of Health, devoted scientists investigate disease mechanisms to develop new diagnostics, innovative therapies and effective tools to implement personalised medicine. The institution is the first supplier of public health information in Luxembourg, a strong cooperation partner in local and international projects and an attractive training place for ambitious early-stage researchers.

Dr Yvan Devaux, Head of Cardiovascular Research Unit, is searching for a student willing to perform a PhD thesis. The candidate will apply for a PhD at the Luxembourg Institute of Health with an AFR grant (research training aid from the Fonds National de la Recherche, Luxembourg) and will start his/her fixed-term employment contract for 3 years after acceptation of the grant by the FNR.

PhD Student in Stem Cell research

3-year fixed-term contract (can be extended to 4 years), full time

Stem cells have the potential to be used to stimulate organ regeneration after injury and to cope with the inability of certain human organs to regenerate. Long noncoding RNAs constitute a large part of the RNA molecules that are transcribed from our genes and, even though they are unable to be translated into proteins like messenger RNAs, they possess a wide variety of transcriptional regulation properties. Past studies in the lab allowed the identification of several long noncoding RNAs associated with tissue regeneration.
During his/her PhD, the applicant will study the role of previously identified long noncoding RNAs in tissue regeneration. The experiments will involve in vitro mechanistic investigations in induced pluripotent stem cells, using gain- and loss-of-function strategies. Different end-points such as cell proliferation, survival, apoptosis, as wells as different aspects of cell function will be studied. The utility of long noncoding RNAs as biomarkers will be investigated using human blood samples. Bioinformatics analytical pipelines will be deployed to predict functional roles of long noncoding RNAs.

Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications:
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Genetics or a related biomedical field. Prior experience in induced pluripotent stem cells would be an advantage, but is not mandatory.
- Good communication would be necessary to deal with the different partners involved in this project, as well as for restitution of the results
- Excellent time management, rigor, perseverance, scientific creativity and originality, writing skills, conciseness, sense of priority and ability to work with others.
- IT skills: Office, Outlook.
- Fluency in English, French would be an asset.
