Beschreibung: We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student with strong interest in epigenetic regulatory mechanisms in development and disease.
During development a large number of widely differing and specialized cell types are generated from a single totipotent zygote. Tissue specific transcription factors work in concert with epigenetic modifiers to establish cellular identity during developmental decisions and epigenetic regulatory mechanisms contribute to the maintenance of distinct chromatin states and cell-type specific gene expression patterns.
The aim of the project is to determine the dynamic epigenetic events occurring during cell commitment, lineage specification, differentiation and dedifferentiation in normal development and pathological alterations of the heart and identify key drivers of these processes. Particular emphasis here will be placed on the role of cell-cell communication and signalling in epigenetic programming of the cardiovascular system. Clarifying the mechanisms regulating the balance and transition between dynamic and stable epigenetic states is fundamental to understanding heart development and function and might uncover novel therapeutic strategies for heart disease.
Methoden: We use a wide range of biochemical, molecular/cell biological, embryological and transgenic techniques to study the transcriptional and epigenetic networks in development and disease both in cell culture and in vivo in mouse and zebrafish.
The applicant should possess a solid background in molecular and cell biology; specific experience in embryonic development, stem cell biology and/or epigenetics will be an advantage.
