Beschreibung: The Cluster of Excellence “The Ocean Floor – Earth’s Uncharted Interface” is part of the Research Faculty MARUM. Within the cluster project Enabler “Molecular and Isotopic Tracers” the work for the position is in the general area of extracellular DNA in marine sediments. The goal of the project is to obtain information on structure and function of past communities and food webs from marine sediment records for reconstructing palaeobiodiversity over time.

The employment is fixed-term and governed by the Act of Academic Fixed-Term Contract, §2 I (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz – WissZeitVG). Therefore, candidates may only be considered for appointment if they still have the respective qualification periods available in accordance with § 2 (1) WissZeitVG.
At MARUM Ph.D. students are supervised by a team of experienced scientists. Additional training and support are offered by the Bremen International Graduate School for Marine Sciences, GLOMAR. These offers include expert as well as skills and methods courses, coaching, networking opportunities, and the opportunity to compete for internal funds. At MARUM, Ph.D. students acquire expert knowledge in their field and a solid background across many disciplines of marine sciences.

Specific duties will include:
1. Sampling of marine sediments during sea-going research expeditions
2. Extraction of nucleic acids from ancient sediment samples
3. Nucleic acid analysis involving state-of-the-art approaches
4. Bioinformatic and statistical analysis of data
5. Opportunity for scientific qualification in the context of a PhD degree
Your profile:
• A completed MSc or diploma degree in Molecular Biology, Microbiology, or Biochemistry or a comparable program
• Interest in palaeobiodiversity
• Knowledge of molecular biology methods is an advantage for the project
• Interest in developing new methods for study of extracellular and ancient DNA
• Skills in molecular bioinformatics would be advantageous
• Working in teams, visiting collaboration partners and participation in research cruises
