Beschreibung: As a member of the Helmholtz Association, Forschungszentrum Jülich makes an effective contribution to solving major challenges facing society in the fields of information, energy, and bioeconomy. It focuses on varied tasks in the area of research management and utilizes large, often unique, scientific infrastructure. Come and work with around 6,100 colleagues across a range of topics and disciplines at one of Europe's largest research centres.

The Institute for Energy and Climate Research, Troposphere (IEK-8), investigates chemical and physical processes which control the formation of secondary pollutants in the atmosphere, such as ozone and aerosols. A good understanding of these processes is essential to improve air quality and mitigate climate change. Photochemical oxidation of volatile organic compounds by hydroxyl radicals is a major contributor to the formation of secondary pollutants. Organic compounds are emitted into the atmosphere by anthropogenic activities, but also to a large extent by plants.

We are offering a

Ph.D. position "Impact of plant emissions on air quality"

Your Job:

The atmospheric simulation chamber in Jülich, one of the world`s leading facilities for atmospheric-chemical mechanism studies, offers the opportunity to investigate the chemical transformation of real plant emissions under natural conditions. State-of-the-art measuring instruments for trace gases, radicals and particles are available for experimental observations, which are interpreted and compared with atmospheric chemical models. The goal is to identify gaps in our current knowledge and finally improve air quality models.

Your tasks in detail:

- experiments in the atmospheric simulation chamber SAPHIR
- planning of experiments with natural plant emissions and determination of chemical conditions
- coordination of the execution of experiments
- measurement of atmospheric trace gases specifically of organic compounds with state-of-the-art instrumentation
- data interpretation using chemical box modelling to simulate observations
- participation in international conferences and publication of the findings in peer-reviewed journals

Your Profile:

- masters degree in physics, chemistry, environmental sciences or a related field
- profound knowledge of atmospheric chemistry
- good experimental skills and interest in working on complex, custom-built instruments
- good skills in data evaluation using mathematical script routines
ability to work in a team
