Beschreibung: Open PhD position in Geomicrobiology

‘Composition and structure of iron-organic-matter complexes in antimicrobial compounds’

We are seeking a PhD student to investigate the iron-binding antimicrobial compound pulcherrimin in comparison to other iron-complexes. Pulcherrimin is naturally produced by several strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis and other human skin and nasal commensals as well as certain yeasts. Pulcherrimin-producing S. epidermidis can inhibit the growth of competitive microorganisms such as bacteria, yeasts and microscopic fungi. However, the antimicrobial mode of action of pulcherrimin and its significance for microbial competition in microbiomes has remained unexplored. We will use a combination of Mössbauer spectroscopy, synchrotron-based X-ray absorbance spectroscopy, cryo-electron microscopy and other methods to determine the composition, structure, charge and identity of Fe-pulcherrimin complexes. For method evaluation, these complexes will be compared to other (environmental) Fe-complexes. In combination with two PhD projects in other Tübingen microbiology research groups, this interdisciplinary project will reveal how one specific compound can affect human microbiome dynamics by combining micronutrient-scavenging and antimicrobial properties. The work is part of the Excellence Cluster “Control of Microorganisms to Fight Infection”. The candidate will be given many opportunities to be creative and innovative, to apply state-of-the art microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, and to work on a challenging topic within a large network of (inter)national collaborators.

Requirements:
• Strong background and/or interest in Chemistry, Geochemistry, Biochemistry, Biogeochemistry and Spectroscopy
• Ability to work independently and in a team
• Excellent management and communication skills
• Highly motivated for interdisciplinary research
• Good computer and language (English) skills

Start date for successful applicants is fall 2019. Employment (TVL E13, 65%, 3 years) will be arranged by the University of Tübingen.
