Beschreibung: Natural tissue is a complex interplay of various components. A key parameter of the stability of natural tissue is the spatially controlled formation of layered structures. Recently, we could show the formation of hydrogels with significant mechanical properties via incorporation graphitic-Carbon Nitride (g-CN).

The PhD student will study the formation of complex hydrogel architectures and their mechanical properties. Both synthetic and analytical tasks are part of the project to assess structure-property relationships. The final goal is to fabricate a composite hydrogel that mimics natural tissues regarding mechanical properties and water content. The research is of multidisciplinary nature and is situated between synthetic polymer chemistry and materials science. Therefore the student should be able to administer collaborations with other groups and colleges.
Anfangsdatum: 1. Oktober 2019
Geschätzte Dauer: 3.5 Jahre
Bezahlung: Stipendium etwa 15000 Pfund pro Jahr
Sonstiges: I am looking for a motivated candidate with broad scientific interests to join the Schmidt Group. The candidate should have a background in polymer chemistry and experience working in a lab environment. Experience in basic organic synthesis and colloid chemistry is an advantage. Moreover, candidates should hold (or expect to hold by the start date) a 1st or upper 2nd class MSc / MChem / BSc or equivalent in a relevant discipline (chemistry, materials, etc.).
Prospective candidates should contact Dr Schmidt for information by email with a CV and cover letter, as soon as possible. Applications will be assessed on a rolling basis.

Funding is available to cover tuition fees for UK/EU applicants for 3.5 years, as well as paying a stipend at the Research Council rate (estimated £14,999 for Session 2019-20). Full funding (including payment of tuition fees) is only available to candidates from within the EU. Self-funded students from outside the EU are encouraged to contact Dr Schmidt directly.
