Beschreibung: Antiferromagnetic materials offer numerous advantages over ferromagnetic ones, among them faster dynamics, less sensitivity to external magnetic fields, and more abundant choice of materials. Antiferromagnets are thus currently moving into the center of interest for new functionalities in spintronics. In this PhD project new materials containing antiferromagnetic spin structures will be designed by controlled deposition on well-defined substrates and their properties characterized by standard surface science techniques including electron diffraction, by magneto-optical Kerr effect, and by soft-x-ray spectroscopies using synchrotron radiation at BESSY II in Berlin. The goal is to develop well-defined hybrid materials based on antiferromagnetic spin structures that can be used to store or process information.
Methoden: We provide excellent conditions for motivated experimentalists. Experiments are carried out both by laboratory-based techniques as well as by using synchrotron radiation.

Sonstiges: A master's degree is required with a master thesis in experimental physics or equivalent. We are seeking a motivated candidate with team spirit and ability for independent work. Experience in one or more of the following is of advantage: Surface science, ultrahigh vacuum, antiferromagnetic materials.
