Beschreibung: The aim of this project is to prepare thin magnetic films on single crystal substrates and characterize them with spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy regarding their structural, electronic, and magnetic properties. The focus is on the discovery of nano-scale complex magnetic order stabilized by higher-order interactions. The experiments will be done in the group of Prof. Roland Wiesendanger in Hamburg, there will be a close collaboration with the theory group of Prof. Stefan Heinze in Kiel.
Methoden: A university degree (Master) in a relevant field is necessary. Prior experience in several of the following fields is advantageous:
solid state physics, (spin-resolved) scanning tunneling microscopy and spectrocopy,
surface science, magnetism, work with ultra-high vacuum, cryogenic temperatures, complex
spin textures. In addition a high intrinsic motivation and individual responsibility, as well as creative scientific thinking and ability to work in a team are required.
