Beschreibung: The Charles University is one of the oldest European universities and a striving hub of science and education in the very heart of Europe.

More than 50,000 students and 4000 academic staff members are working and living in the buzzing hub that is Prague, Czech Republic’s capital.

Within the Plankton Evolvability work group at the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology (https://www.natur.cuni.cz/geology/paleontology) of the Charles University’s Faculty of Science, we are looking for two dedicated Ph.D. students, offering you an exciting choice between the following projects:

1. Evolvability of planktonic Foraminifera: Adaptive reactions to environmental change, https://stars-natur.cz/phd-positions/geology/evolvability-of-planktonic-foraminifera-adaptive-reactions-to-environmental-change?back=ig057

2. Environmental adaptation of the marine phytoplankton and its impact on the marine carbon pump, https://stars-natur.cz/phd-positions/geology/environmental-adaptation-of-the-marine-phytoplankton-and-its-impact-on-the-marine-carbon-pump?back=ig057

You will be a member of an engaging work group with an interdisciplinary background in micropalaeontology, geology, geochemistry, and ecology/evolution and work in collaboration with several internationally recognized colleagues from other research institutes.

We offer you the opportunity to engage in morphometric, geochemical, and systematic work in the marine plankton, and to gain expertise in ecological modelling and quantitative analyses throughout your Ph.D. The specifics of the project are flexible and will be adjusted to the candidates demonstrated talents and interests. The position requires an M.Sc. degree (or equivalent) in geology, biology, or a related field. Existing experience in micropalaeontology/ecology and knowledge of the open statistical computing language R will be a surplus.

If you are an engaging and creative young scientist who would enjoy joining our team, please make sure to apply via our online STARS application tool at https://stars-natur.cz/phd-positions/geology (deadline: 13 March 2020). Your application should include a motivation letter, a curriculum vitae, and names and addresses of at least two academic referees. The position will start in October 2020 and be funded for three years, with a monthly salary of around 1100 €.
