Beschreibung: As a member of the Helmholtz Association, Forschungszentrum Juelich makes an effective contribution to solving major challenges facing society in the fields of information, energy, and bioeconomy. It focuses on varied tasks in the area of research management and utilizes large, often unique, scientific infrastructure. Come and work with around 6,100 colleagues across a range of topics and disciplines at one of Europe’s largest research centres.

The laboratory of Christoph Fahlke in the Institute of Complex Systems – Cellular Biophysics is looking for a PhD student with a thesis project that focuses on the chloride homeostasis in the cytoplasm and in cell organelles. We are an interdisciplinary group focusing on the molecular and cellular function of membrane transport proteins (PNAS [2013] 110, 12486-12491, Cell [2015] 160, 542-553, Glia [2017] 65, 388-400, Nat Commun [2017] 8, 2279, EMBO J [2019] e101468) and on their dysfunction in genetic and acquired human diseases (Am J Hum Genet [2009] 85, 273-280; Brain [2012] 135, 3416-3425, Sci Rep [2017] 7, 13913, Nat Genet [2018], 50, 349-354).

We are offering a

PhD Position – SLC26 anion exchangers in intracellular chloride homeostasis

Your Job:
The PhD project focuses on an anion exchanger that has been proposed to be critically involved in ischemic brain edema. We are interested in understanding the role of this transporter in setting anion concentrations in the cytoplasm as well as in intracellular organelles. Available methods range from molecular biology, fluorescence microscopy, fluorescence lifetime imaging, optogenetics to neuronal cell culture.

Your Profile:
- master´s degree in the field of Biology/Physics/Chemistry or related
- high motivation and interest and/or experience in biophysics and biochemistry
- social competence and good communication skills for collaborative work in and with interdisciplinary teams
- ability to communicate in English

Our Offer:
- access to multiple techniques ranging from computational biology on individual proteins to the analysis of organ functions in animal models
- opportunity to get expertise in state-of art techniques and strategies in the field of molecular biology, fluorescence microscopy, fluorescence lifetime imaging, optogenetics, neuronal cell culture
- possible membership in the International Helmholtz Research School of Biophysics and Soft Matter http://www.ihrs-biosoft.de that provides complementary research training at the interfaces of biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as transferable skills courses
- a contract for the duration of 3 years
- we will provide continuous scientific mentoring and discussions by your scientific advisor
- the doctoral degree will be conferred by the Heinrich Heine University, Düsseldorf
- outstanding scientific and technical infrastructure – ideal conditions for successfully completing a doctoral degree
