Goal: To understand the effect of multiple myeloma (MM) in the bone extracellular matrix by examining human bone biopsies at different stages of disease progression.
Multiple myeloma (MM) is a type of blood cancer in which plasma cells grow aberrantly and produce abnormal antibodies. In the clinic, MM patients show lesions in the skeleton that do not heal, even when the patient is in complete remission. MM cells mainly reside in the bone marrow and alter bone homeostasis by activating bone resorption and inhibiting bone formation. We are interested in understanding how these cancer cells alter the properties of the bone extracellular matrix at different stages of disease progression.
Methoden: The project will involve documentation and analysis of human bone biopsies collected from patients who present several stages of this type of blood cancer. The analysis of these bone biopsies will be based in histology, immunohistochemistry, histomorphometry, confocal and electron microscopy. Exploratory analysis will involve immunohistochemistry to localize cancer cells in the tissue, histology and histomorphometry to characterize bone tissue composition, and confocal and electron microscopy to evaluate changes in the bone microstructure.

Sonstiges: You should have a background in biotechnology, biomedical engineering, biomedicine, biology or similar, and strong interest in cancer biology. The project will be carried out at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in the group of Dr Amaia Cipitria together with Dr Inés Moreno. This project is part of a collaboration with the oncologist Prof. Dr. med. Franziska Jundt, Universitätsklinikum Würzburg.
