Beschreibung: Two doctoral (PhD) candidate researcher positions in fusion plasma turbulence modelling and simulation:

Two early-stage doctoral candidate researcher positions in computational plasma physics for up to 3.5 years each are available within an Austrian Science Fund (FWF) financed research project (TIFF) at the Institute for Ion Physics and Applied Physics at University of Innsbruck.

The research group "Nonlinear Dynamics and Complex Systems" at the University of Innsbruck is looking for qualified and motivated doctoral (PhD) candidate esearchers working on modelling and simulation of fusion plasma turbulence under supervision of Univ.-Prof. Dr. Alexander Kendl.

The FWF funded project aims on further theoretical development and numerical simulations of advanced gyrofluid models for turbulence, transport and structure formation in magnetised plasmas, with a focus on modelling the edge and scrape-off layer of tokamak and stellarator fusion plasmas.

The candidates should hold a Master's degree in Physics (or equivalent), and ideally have solid knowledge in theoretical plasma physics and/or fluid dynamics, and already have gained some practical experience in computational physics and/or numerical simulations with C/C++ codes (or a similar general-purpose programming language used in scientific computing) and Linux. Proficiency in English and good communication skills are required.

The positions are initially limited to 2 years each, with a possibility for extensions up to a further 1.5 years each. Salaries are according to FWF regulations (in 2020 presently 30'878,40 € p.a. gross salary for 30 h/week pre taxes, medical and social contributions). The recruited researchers are offered the possibility to attend University of Innsbruck's structured doctoral programme DK CIM on "Computational Interdisciplinary Modelling" and its joint activities such as winter schools.

Applicants should provide a CV, including a motivation letter explaining their interest in the PhD research positions, the masters's certificate (or equivalent) and transcript of grades, a copy of the master's thesis, and contact details of two reference persons. Applications have to be addressed to Prof. Dr. Alexander Kendl via e-mail to tiff-iap@uibk.ac.at as a single attached pdf file (compressed to less than 15 MB) until 30. September 2020. The positions can be filled by November 2020.
