Beschreibung: Single microorganisms form
tight functional networks, which are named as microbiomes.
Soils are a hotspot for microbial diversity on earth, and soil microorganisms contribute strongly to
the services provided by soils. This includes the promotion of plant growth driving food, feed and
fuel production, sequestration of carbon triggering mitigation of climate change effects,
degradation of pollutants resulting in a safeguarding of drinking water resources and a general
protection function of biodiversity also of higher trophic levels.
In addition to site specific conditions including soil type and local climate, land use and land use
intensity is one of the most important drivers of the diversity of microorganisms in soil. However
still there is a lack of knowledge on the role and the interactions of the above mentioned factors
for soil microbial diversity and functioning.
In the frame of the German Biodiversity Exploratories we will investigate the role of land use
intensity on the soil microbiome of grassland and forest sites in three model regions across
Germany.
Methoden: We use modern molecular approaches to characterize the structure and function of the
soil microbiome and to identify keystone species. The project includes both field- and lab work
and requires interest in using next generation sequencing and bioinformatics and machine learning.
