Beschreibung: We are seeking a highly motivated doctoral researcher for the DFG-funded Sino-German Research Training Group (GRK 2309) “Geo-ecosystems in transition on the Tibetan Plateau” (TransTiP).

TransTiP strives to understand effects of climate change on the Tibetan Plateau, an area of crucial importance for the global hydrological, energy and biogeochemical cycles. In particular, the research program focuses to bridge our understanding on dynamics of sediments, soil organic carbon, water, and biodiversity in the light of land use and climate change. For more details please refer to https://www.tu-braunschweig.de/irtg-transtip/research

The doctoral researcher will be located at the Leibniz Universität in Hannover (Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Environmental Physics in Civil Engineering, Prof. Dr. Thomas Graf) and work in very close collaboration with the Institute of Geophysics and extraterrestrial Physics, TU Braunschweig (Prof. Dr. A. Hördt).

Methoden: As a core task, the researcher will use hydrogeological tools in a permafrost dominated alpine catchment in order to answer a variety of topics including sediment transport, freeze-thaw cycles, small- (Richards flow) and large-scale (groundwater flow) water fluxes, as well as method development to constrain hydrogeophysical parameters (e.g. hydraulic conductivity). This work should go hand in hand with a doctoral research project working on sediment and water transport models using geophysical methods. Furthermore, we encourage the researcher to develop and pursue an own, independent research line fitting the main scientific interests of the host laboratories and further develop leadership skills by closely collaborating with the doctoral researchers of TransTiP. Willingness to perform sampling trips in high-altitude areas and to perform part of the experimental work in collaborating Chinese research institutions (Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing and Lhasa) is mandatory. Project details can be found here: https://www.tu-braunschweig.de/irtg-transtip/research/projects/project-w4.
Anfangsdatum: 1. Februar 2021
Geschätzte Dauer: 3 years
Bezahlung: 3 years, 50-100% TVL-E13
Sonstiges: We will preferably hire a researcher with experience hydrological modeling. Applicants must have excellent communication skills, both written and oral, in English, and should have strong affection to acquire interdisciplinary work and research experience. The program includes a 6-months research stay at our partner institutions in China and provides excellent scientific and transferable skills training at all participating locations. We offer exciting modern research projects in well-equipped laboratories using state-of-the-art technologies, a communicative atmosphere within an excellent scientific network, mutual exchange with a broad range of institutions and participation in international and national conferences and workshops.

Please submit your application (in English) as one pdf file to transtip@tu-braunschweig.de before 12. December 2020. The application should include the following information: CV, transcript of records, certificates, letter of motivation, and two reference letters. Further information and eligibility criteria: How to apply.

For any further information concerning the position, requirements and application process refer to our website or contact Prof. Graf (graf(at)hydromech.uni-hannover.de) or the TransTiP Scientific Coordinator: Dr. Nicole Börner (transtip(at)tu-braunschweig.de).
