Beschreibung: The EU funded project GICO aims at developing small to medium scale residual biomass plants to overcome the main barriers that prevent renewable energy technologies from forming the backbone of the energy system. Therefore, new materials (CO2 capture sorbents; high temperature inorganic removal sorbents; catalytic filter candles; membranes for oxygen separation and methanol production) and technologies (Hydro Thermal Carbonisation; Sorption Enhanced Gasification; Hot Gas Conditioning; Carbon Capture, Storage and Use; Power to Gas via Plasma conversion) will be developed. The PhD student at IEK-2 will be mainly involved in lab-scale investigations and thermodynamic modelling of behaviour and control of ashes and volatile inorganic species as well as their interactions with several materials throughout the process.

Your tasks in detail:
* Experimental investigations on release and behaviour of inorganic trace species using molecular beam mass spectrometry coupled to laboratory reactors
* Experimental investigation of sorbent materials for removal of detrimental inorganic trace species
* Characterisation of ashes and sorbents by chemical analysis, XRD, SEM/EDS etc.
* Thermodynamic model calculations using FactSage
* Participation in project meetings and coordination with internal and external partners
* Publication and presentation of your research results in relevant journals or at international conferences

Your Profile:
* Excellent university degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics or a comparable discipline
* High interest in experimental work and thermochemical modelling
* Ability to show initiative and work independently
* Excellent cooperation and communication skills and ability to work as part of a team
* Good skills in spoken and written English and German
