Beschreibung: The mission of the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung is to understand and design nanostructured materials down to atomic and electronic scales. In this spirit, we conduct basic research on structural and functional materials, mostly metallic alloys, embracing synthesis and processing, characterization and properties, as well as their response in engineering components exposed to real environmental conditions. We work interdisciplinary, with intense mutual stimulation among experimentalists and theoreticians as well as among different groups and departments.

The junior research group 'Spectroscopy at Electrochemical Interfaces' studies properties and dynamic processes on solid interfaces using modern optical interface spectroscopy methods. These are mostly AFM-IR, IR-, Raman, and UV-Vis spectroscopies and spectroscopic ellipsometry, coupled with electrochemistry.

We are looking for motivated and talented students to join us. Currently there are two PhD positions available in our group:

Project I: Study basic phenomena of biomolecule (peptide and protein) interface interactions on 'smart' electro-responsive interfaces by in situ ATR-IR.

Project II: Study basic phenomena of interface solvation of nanoparticles by vibrational solvation shell spectroscopies.

Applicants should:

- hold an excellent B.Sc. or M.Sc. degree in chemistry, physics or a related field
- have profound English language skills allowing scientific discussions and presentations
- have practical experience in lab work and research projects
- have hands-on experience with interface spectroscopy methods especially vibrational spectroscopies are a bonus

We offer:
The work will be embedded in the international environment of the Department of Interface Chemistry and Surface Engineering at MPIE. Furthermore, our group is deeply embedded within the cluster of excellence 'RESOLV' (www.solvation.de) and in collaboration with the Ruhr-University Bochum (RUB). Thus, prospective students may be involved in the activities of this highly dynamic network and join the graduate program of the integrated Graduate School Solvation Science (iGSS) at RUB.
