The Leipzig University, Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Laboratory Medicine, Clinical Chemistry and Molecular diagnostic offers a position as Doctoral Student (PhD Student) within the CRC 1052 project A9
Plant sterols were found to be incorporated into cell membranes like cholesterol which result in altered membrane signaling. Some studies suggest that plant sterols are protective against neuroinflammation. The PhD position will take part in the project aiming to understand the functional role of plant sterols in inflammatory lipid raft signaling for microglia activation. Targeted and non-targeted state-of-the-art techniques are available as: liquid chromatography: UltiMate 3000 nano-HPLC (Thermo Scientific) and Shimadzu HPLC; mass spectrometry: Orbitrap Exploris 480 (Thermo Scientific) and QTRAP 6500, QTRAP 6500+ (Sciex); and liquid extraction surface analysis: NanoMate Triversa (Advion).
Tasks & responsibilities (depending on the project)
• Establish mass spectrometric applications for identification and quantification of lipid species and proteins in cells and tissue by high-resolution mass spectrometry
• Method development for micro-extraction of tissue slices using liquid extraction surface analysis coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry
• Analyze biological samples from animal and clinical studies by LC-MS/MS and advanced statistical software tools.
• Work closely with scientists from neighboring disciplines to put your results into context and perform association and pathway analyses of potential mechanisms
Your profile:
• You are a highly qualified and motivated student holding a (or being close to obtaining) M.Sc. or equivalent degree in Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Cell / Molecular Biology, Neuroscience or related fields
• Ideally, you have first practical scientific expertise on mass spectrometry coupled to liquid chromatography, in preparation techniques for biological sample material (e.g. plasma, tissue etc.), experimental work with animals, and/or working with cell culture models
• You are interested in statistical analysis and handling big data
• You are a team player with the ability to work together with colleagues from various disciplines and nationalities
The applications will be accepted until March 20th 2022 via e-mail, including a full academic CV, publication list (if any), copies of your degree certificates and contact details of two referees (if any).
