Beschreibung: Description of the DFG-funded Research Training Group 2543 (collaboration University Hospital Tübingen): New surgical methods aim to minimize invasiveness, morbidity and duration of the treatment while maximizing the effectiveness. During these surgical interventions, a reliable identification of target structures and surrounding tissue is of major importance for achieving this objective, particularly in the field of oncology. The RTG focuses on intraoperative tissue identification. The fusion of novel multimodal sensor systems by means of machine learning offers a high potential for new procedures to discriminate between tissues that goes beyond the information content of the separate sensor data. Activities and responsibilities: The aim in project A4 is to investigate how elasto-mechanical tissue effects can be used to differentiate between healthy and diseased tissue. One goal is the further development of the method called water flow elastography (WaFE) and the miniaturization of the measurement probe. The work includes measurements on human and animal tissue to establish the WaFE technique for application in the OR. The physical basics should also be examined; the structural and mechanical properties of living cells should be characterized by optical and scanning probe microscopy (e.g. AFM, SICM).
• Excellent Master’s degree in physics, biophysics, nano-science, medical technology, or similar
• Knowledge of sensors, construction and finite-elemente simulations
• Programming experience (e.g. Matlab, Labview, C) desired
• Communication and team skills for working in an interdisciplinary environment
• High level of initiative and creativity
• Excellent skills in spoken and written English
