We are offering a four year

Doctoral Project Opportunity – Correlative Optical, X-Ray, and Electron Tomography
Your Job:
Understanding how neurons and entire brain regions are interconnected requires covering length scales from molecular (nanometers) to the cellular range (micrometers) up to the entire brain. In the research project, state-of-the-art optical, serial electron microscopy, and synchrotron X-ray methods will be combined to meet this multiscale challenge. The project will involve all aspects of the techniques including sample preparation, experimental development and the handling and analysis of massive data sets. The research project will combine 3D-polarized light microscopy (3D-PLI), serial scanning electron microscopy (sSEM), and synchrotron scanning microbeam X-ray diffraction (sµXRD) combining expertise from the institutes INM-1 and JCNS-1 at Forschungszentrum Jülich.

We are looking for a doctoral researcher who will:

Establish brain sample preparation for 3D-PLI, sSEM, and sµXRD
Perform 3D-PLI, sSEM and sµXRD experiments on mouse and human brain samples
Develop correlated multi-modal image analysis with workflow
Determine multi-scale 3D neuron fiber orientation in brains
Contribute to Human Brain Atlas

Your Profile:
Strong motivation for pursuing a doctoral degree within four years in an ambitious but rewarding interdisciplinary project related to brain imaging
M.Sc. in natural science (preferably physics, chemistry, or biology)
Interest in method development and lab work
Expertise in standard microscopy technique(s) is desirable
Expertise and strong interest in programming and big data analysis

The PhD position is fixed for a term of four years. Pay will be in line with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund).
